Breast cancer screening

Who breast screening is for?

NHS breast screening is offered to women aged between 50 (first invitation issued by 53rd birthday) up to your 71st birthday. Everyone registered with a GP as female will be invited.

When will you be invited?

You'll automatically get your first invitation for breast screening between the ages of 50 and 53. You'll then be invited every 3 years until your 71st birthday.

If you’re transgender or non-binary and you would like to be invited for breast screening, ask your GP surgery for advice.

You need to be registered with a GP surgery to be invited for breast screening.

If you have not been invited for breast screening by the age of 53 and think you should have, contact your local breast screening service

If you’re 71 or over
  • You will not automatically be invited for breast screening if you are aged 71 or over.
  • But you can still have breast screening every 3 years if you want to. You will need to call your local breast screening service to ask for an appointment.

If you're transgender or non-binary

If you're a trans man, trans woman or are non-binary, how you are invited will depend on the sex you are registered with at a GP surgery:

if you're registered as female with a GP surgery you will automatically be invited for breast screening

if you're registered as male with a GP surgery you will not automatically be invited for breast screening however may still be eligible.

What to expect during breast screening?

Some women can feel anxious or reluctant to go for breast screening and aren't sure what to expect. We would strongly encourage you to attend when called up as it is an excellent way to pick up on early breast cancers. Watch a video which summarises what to expect from breast screening

Regular breast self examinations

We would encourage all women to practice regular breast examinations at home. Examining yourself on a monthly basis helps you to know what is normal for you and then allow quicks identification if there is a change. If you have any concerns about changes to you breasts, please speak with your GP as soon as possible.

Bowel cancer screening

Bowel cancer screening is a test you do at home that checks for signs of bowel cancer. It's offered to people aged 50 to 74. Please be aware if you have symptoms such as persistent abdominal pain, change in bowel habit, weight loss or rectal bleeding contact the GP for a review. In this situation a normal bowel screening is not reassuring and a GP appointment and further assessment is necessary.

Why bowel cancer screening is done

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK.

Bowel cancer screening uses a test called a faecal immunochemical test (FIT) to look for blood in a sample of your poo. This could be a sign of bowel cancer.

You collect the sample at home and send it by post to be tested.

It can help find cancer early, and before you have any symptoms, which may mean it's easier to treat.

Who bowel screening is for

Bowel cancer screening is currently offered to people aged 50 to 74 every 2 years.

This is because your risk of getting bowel cancer gets higher as you get older.

You can also get screening for bowel cancer every 2 years if you're aged 75 or over, but you need to call the bowel cancer screening helpline on 0800 707 6060 and ask for the test.

How to get a bowel cancer screening home test (FIT kit)

If you're aged 50 to 74 and registered with a GP, you'll automatically get a bowel cancer screening home test kit (FIT kit) through the post every 2 years.

Depending on when you turned 50, you will be sent your first test at the age of either 50, 52 or 54.

If you're aged 75 or over, you can call the bowel cancer screening helpline on 0800 707 6060 every 2 years to ask for the test.

If you do not have a permanent home address, you can ask your GP surgery for your test kit to be sent to the GP surgery or to another address

If you think you're eligible for bowel cancer screening but you've not been invited, or had your test kit, call the bowel cancer screening helpline on 0800 707 6060.
It's your choice if you want to have bowel cancer screening. Screening does not stop you getting bowel cancer, but it is the best way to find cancer at an early stage.

If you do not want to be invited for screening, call the bowel cancer screening helpline to be taken off the screening list. You can ask to be put back on the list any time if you change your mind.

How to do a bowel cancer screening home test (FIT kit)

Your test kit (FIT kit) should include a sample bottle, an envelope, and instructions on how to do the test.

To do the FIT kit:

  • Write the date on the sample bottle.
  • Use a clean container to catch your poo. Do not let your poo touch the toilet water. This can be a bit difficult, and you may need to try a few times.
  • Open the sample bottle and remove the lid, which has a sample stick attached.
  • Gently scrape the end of the sample stick along your poo until all the grooves are covered. Only a small amount is needed.
  • Put the sample stick back into the sample bottle and close the lid tightly.
  • Wash your hands.
  • Check you've written the date you did the sample on the sample bottle.
  • Put the sample bottle in the envelope included in your test kit and seal it.
  • Post the envelope with your sample as soon as you can. Postage is free and you do not need a stamp.
  • Your poo sample will be tested to check if it contains blood. Having blood in your poo may be a sign of bowel cancer.

Cancer Care

If you have recently received a cancer diagnosis, we want to support you. As a practice we offer a 3-month cancer care review with our trained care coordinator who can direct you to useful sources of support.

This should happen within 12 months of your diagnosis and is an opportunity to talk about your experiences of cancer and any concerns you have, understand what support is available and help to make a personalised self-management plan. You will be sent a questionnaire to complete prior to the appointment which will be used in the discussion.

Cervical Screening and Smears

Cervical screening, which used to be called a smear test, is a test to check the health of the cervix and help prevent cervical cancer. All women aged 25 to 64 are invited for cervical screening every 5 years. Everyone with a cervix should be offered screening.

Some women or people with a cervix may find having a cervical smear difficult for many reasons. If there are any adjustments, we can make to help you feel more at ease please do discuss this with the clinician performing the procedure.

Before you book your appointment, it might help to think about what would make screening easier for you. You might already know what can help or you may want to discuss this with a nurse or health professional who can make some suggestions. Here are some tips that might help:

  • If you get anxious sitting in waiting rooms, let the receptionist know. You can ask to book the first appointment of the day, so that you do not have to wait long.
  • If you would prefer to be seen by a woman, ask for a female health professional.
  • Tell the receptionist if you would like a chaperone. This is a usually another health professional. You might also want a friend, relative, partner or carer present.
  • You may feel you need more time for your cervical screening appointment. Ask the receptionist if you can book a longer appointment to give you more time during and after.

You may also wish to consider asking for an appointment just to talk about what happens during the screening first (you do not have to have the test at this appointment).

If you find screening painful a doctor may be able to prescribe creams or medications to help you feel more relaxed.

Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme

  • Around 22,000 people with diabetes die early every year
  • Type 2 diabetes is a leading cause of preventable sight loss in people of working age and is a major contributor to kidney failure, heart attack, and stroke
  • There are currently five million people in England at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
  • Evidence shows that many cases of Type 2 diabetes are preventable
  • Evidence shows support for people to maintain a healthy weight and be more active, can significantly reduce the risk of developing the condition.

Lung cancer screening

The NHS is offering Lung Health Checks in north central London to help diagnose lung cancer earlier and save more lives.

The Targeted Lung Health Check Programme is a new service offered to people aged 55 to 74 who are at a greater risk of developing lung cancer – current and former smokers. The check is firstly a conversation with a health professional and then, if needed, a quick and simple CT scan. The Targeted Lung Health Check can identify signs of cancer at an early stage when it is much more treatable and the survival rate is much higher. Attending a Targeted Lung Health Check could save your life.

Please ensure we are aware of your smoking status.

If you are eligible for a Lung Health Check, you will be sent a letter in the post.

Checks cannot be requested by patients.

Prostate screening

At present there is no formal screening programme for prostate cancer therefore you will not be routinely invited to have this tested. However, any male or person with a prostate over the age of 50 years can request a PSA test. The PSA test is a blood test that can help to check for prostate conditions such as prostate cancer or an enlarged prostate gland. You can do this by sending an eConsult. Patients with Black or mixed Black heritage or those with a family history of prostate or breast cancer can request a PSA test from the age of 45 years.

For 48 hours before your PSA test, do not:

  • have anal sex
  • ejaculate (come)
  • do anything that leaves you out of breath, such as exercise

These can increase your PSA levels which could make the test less accurate.

You can eat and drink as usual before having a PSA test.
